Demythologizing Chernobyl and Other Radioactive Fairy Tales

Norbert Rempe

Enlightened understanding of radioactivity and nuclear subjects must be based on data, facts, and evidence; not myths, superstitions, and liturgical regulatory compliance. The 33rd anniversary of the Chernobyl accident offers yet another opportunity to challenge unrealistic but hide-bound assumptions and persistent phobias largely generated by conclusion-averse bureaucracies and amplified by dominant media. Temporal and spatial context matters, and the concepts of lost opportunity cost and comparative risk analysis must be consistently applied to the banal “Safety First” profession of good intentions. Poorly and hardly justifiable decisions increase real risk to health, lives, and the environment. Professionals (nuclear and other) must heed Immanuel Kant’s famous 1784 exhortation: “Aude Sapere!” (Dare to think for yourself) and participate in vigorous public debate on these “controversial” topics.

Norbert Rempe worked on the WIPP project for 23 as a Geologist, a member of the Speakers Bureau, in Quality assurance, in Communications, and in International Outreach. He visited Chernobyl in 2014, and is a member of “Scientists for Accurate Radiation Information.”
