The commercial nuclear power industry had its first significant wake-up call in 1979 as a result of the accident, partial core meltdown, at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station near Harrisburg, PA. Many fundamental problems involving hardware, procedures, training, and attitudes toward safety and regulation contributed to the event. The 1979 accident at Three Mile Island Unit 2 was the worst accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant history. This presentation will discuss the moments leading up to the event and emphasize the importance of having a strong nuclear safety culture.
